Mormon 2:1 And now it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and third year, the Nephites did go up with their armies to battle against the Lamanites, out of the land of Desolation.

Mormon 2:2 And it came to pass that the armies of the Nephites were driven back again to the land of Desolation.

Mormon 2:3 And while they were yet weary, a fresh army of the Lamanites did come upon them; and they had a sore battle, insomuch that the Lamanites did take possession of the city Desolation, and did slay many of the Nephites, and did take many prisoners; and the remainder did flee and join the inhabitants of the city Teancum.

Mormon 2:8 And it came to pass in the three hundred and sixty and fourth year, the Lamanites did come against the city Teancum, that they might take possession of the city Teancum also.

Mormon 2:9 And it came to pass that they were repulsed and driven back by the Nephites.

Lamanites to Desolation and Teancum on a world map

Commentary    up to world map

The reference that the Nephites "did go up with their armies" to meet the Lamanites would be consistent with going through the narrow passage into the land southward. The land southward is much higher in elevation. Going through the narrow neck and past Bountiful does go up but then also goes down in elevation and is not consistent with the term "up."

The terrain between Desolation and Teancum in this world location is fairly difficult to travel. It is not level. This could be considered consistent with the Book of Mormon in that no other cities are mentioned along the coast northward of Teancum and why Teancum is mentioned very late. It is not a place that is easy to get to and travel further along the coast becomes more difficult.
