Mormon 1:71 And it came to pass that in the three hundred and sixty and first year, the Lamanites did come down to the city of Desolation to battle against us; and it came to pass that in that year, we did beat them, insomuch that they did return to their own lands again.

Mormon 1:72 And in the three hundred and sixty and second year, they did come down again to battle.

Nephites from Shem to Desolation on a world map

Commentary    up to world map

Regarding "narrow passage which led into the land southward" mentioned in Mormon 1:61 and 1:69, there is a narrow passage that exists from the coastal area into the elevated area of the land southward. There is currently a road, named Francisco Sarabia, that goes through this passage from Arriaga to Cintalapa, Chiapas. There are only two roads that go from the coast to the elevated area of the land southward and the second road is just a few miles north of Francisco Sarabia and it goes over terrain that is rougher than the Francisco Sarabia. So, this world location is consistent with the Book of Mormon. The narrow passage is a strategic route included in the treaty with the Lamanites and this world location has only a space of a few miles where it's possible to travel from the coast to the elevated Grijalva River valley.
