2 Nephi 4:7 [5:5] And it came to pass that the Lord did warn me, that I, Nephi, should depart from them, and flee into the wilderness, and all those who would go with me.

2 Nephi 4:8 [5:6] Wherefore, it came to pass that I, Nephi, did take my family, and also Zoram and his family, and Sam, mine elder brother, and his family, and Jacob, and Joseph, my younger brethren, and also my sisters, and all those who would go with me.

Alma 13:69 [22:27] Which ran from the sea east, even to the sea west, and round about on the borders of the sea-shore, and the borders of the wilderness which was on the north, by the land of Zarahemla, through the borders of Manti, by the head of the river Sidon, running from the east towards the west; and thus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided.

Alma 13:73 [22:29] Nevertheless the Nephites had taken possession of all the northern parts of the land, bordering on the wilderness, at the head of the river Sidon, from the east to the west, round about on the wilderness side; on the north, even until they came to the land which they called Bountiful.

Alma 13:76 [22:32] And now it was only the distance of a day and a half's journey for a Nephite, on the line Bountiful, and the land Desolation, from the east to the west sea;

Commentary: This is from a point east of the west sea, not all the way to the east sea.

Lamanite Controlled Areas on a world map

Commentary    up to world map

The boundaries mentioned in Alma are included on this map to illustrate that when Nephi left the area, Laman, Lemuel and their descendants had control of the area left by Nephi as they followed Nephi later. This is an internal consistency in the Book of Mormon.
