Helaman 3:1 Behold, now it came to pass in the sixty and ninth year of the reign of the Judges over the people of the Nephites, that Nephi, the son of Helaman, returned to the land of Zarahemla, from the land northward: for he had been forth among the people who were in the land northward, and did preach the word of God unto them, and did prophesy many things unto them;

Helaman 3:2 And they did reject all his words, insomuch that he could not stay among them, but returned again unto the land of his nativity;

Helaman 5:119 And as they went forth to lay their hands on him, behold, he did cast himself down from the wall, and did flee out of their lands, yea, even unto his own country, and began to preach and to prophesy among his own people.

Samuel to Zarahemla on a world map

Commentary    up to world map

There are two pieces of information in Helaman 2:78 that indicate that the land southward was not everything southward of the narrow neck. First, it describes the land southward as a Nephite possession and the land of Zarahemla as a Lamanite possession. It also uses the term "thence" which also signifies crossing a boundary (see Discoveries).
