Sidom

Sidom

This is the land of Sidom. Due to the practice of naming a land by the same name as the city, it is presumed to also be the city of Sidom. The land of Sidom bordered the land of Ammonihah, was northward of the land of Ammonihah, and was near to the land of Zarahemla. It may have bordered the land of Zarahemla.

Commentaries (view it on a map)

ALMA 10:86 [15:1]: And it came to pass that Alma and Amulek were commanded to depart out of that city; and they departed, and came out even into the land of Sidom;

Commentary: This verse references the places of Ammonihah and Sidom. The phrase 'that city' refers to Ammonihah. The grammar rules for the term 'even' indicates the land of Sidom is next to the land of Ammonihah.

ALMA 10:87 [15:1]: And behold, there they found all the people who had departed out of the land of Ammonihah, who had been cast out and stoned, because they believed in the words of Alma:

Commentary: This verse references the places of Ammonihah, Minon, and Sidom. The term 'they' refers to Alma and Amulek. They found the people in the land of Sidom that had been cast out of the land of Ammonihah. Those people held opposite beliefs than the people in Minon (which also bordered Ammonihah), so, by Occam's Razor and human nature, the land of Sidom is north of Ammonihah and away from the land of Minon.

ALMA 10:89 [15:3]: And also Zeezrom lay sick at Sidom, with a burning fever, which was caused by the great tribulations of his mind, on account of his wickedness, for he supposed that Alma and Amulek were no more; and he supposed that they had been slain, by the cause of his iniquity.

Commentary: This verse references the place of Sidom. The phrase 'at Sidom' may mean the city of Sidom.

ALMA 10:91 [15:4]: Now when he heard that Alma and Amulek were in the land of Sidom, his heart began to take courage; and he sent a message immediately unto them, desiring them to come unto him.

Commentary: This verse references the place of Sidom. The term 'he' refers to Zeezrom. This verse indicates that although Alma and Amulek were in the land of Sidom, they were not at the same location as Zeezrom. This further indicates that the phrase 'at Sidom' in Alma 10:89 [15:3] probably indicates the city of Sidom.

ALMA 10:101 [15:11]: And this was done to the great astonishment of all the people; and the knowledge of this went forth throughout all the land of Sidom.

Commentary: This verse references the place of Sidom. The phrase 'throughout' indicates people and villages throughout the land of Sidom. This further indicates that there is a city of Sidom.

ALMA 10:103 [15:13]: And Alma established a church in the land of Sidom, and consecrated priests and teachers in the land, to baptize unto the Lord whosoever were desirous to be baptized.

Commentary: This verse references the place of Sidom. The phrase 'in the land' refers to villages in the land.

ALMA 10:108 [15:17]: Therefore, after Alma having established the church at Sidom, seeing a great check, yea, seeing that the people were checked as to the pride of their hearts, and began to humble themselves before God,

Commentary: This verse references the place of Sidom. The church is specified as being established in a specific location. Hence, the phrase 'at Sidom' means the city of Sidom.

ALMA 10:110 [15:18]: Now as I said, Alma having seen all these things, therefore he took Amulek and came over to the land of Zarahemla, and took him to his own house, and did administer unto him in his tribulations, and strengthened him in the Lord.

Commentary: This verse references the places of a ridge between Sidom and Zarahemla, Sidom, and Zarahemla. The land of Zarahemla is somewhere near Sidom. The phrase 'came over' means there is a ridge between the land of Sidom and the land of Zarahemla.

ALMA 21:163 [49:12]: Therefore they retreated into the wilderness, and took their camp, and marched towards the land of Noah, supposing that to be the next best place for them to come against the Nephites;

Commentary: This verse references the places of Ammonihah, Noah, Sidom, the wilderness around Ammonihah, and the wilderness between Ammonihah and Noah. There is wilderness between the land of Ammonihah and the land of Noah. Since the wilderness around Ammonihah is on only one side on the land of Ammonihah, it is on the side that is generally between the land of Ammonihah and the land of Noah. Both of the lands of Noah and Sidom border the land of Ammonihah. Since the land attacked by the Lamanites after Ammonihah is Noah and not Sidom, Occam's Razor would locate the the land of Noah on the borders of the lands controlled by the Nephites and the land of Sidom more in the interior of the lands controlled by the Nephites.
