Commentaries (view it on a map)

ETHER 1:28 [2:6]: And it came to pass that they did travel in the wilderness, and did build barges, in which they did cross many waters, being directed continually by the hand of the Lord.

Commentary: This verse references the places of the sea in the wilderness and the wilderness between the valley Nimrod and the sea in the wilderness. The phrase 'many waters' means sea. By strict interpretation, it can mean only one sea. Working backwards from Moriancumer, their travel would be in a easterly direction, which would put the sea in the wilderness eastward of the wilderness beyond the valley Nimrod.

ETHER 1:29 [2:7]: And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people;

Commentary: This verse references the places of Moriancumer, the Promised Land (Ether) and the sea in the wilderness. This is the first verse that mentions the 'land of promise' in the Book of Ether and will be referred to as the 'Promised Land (Ether)'. Since the landing at the Promised Land (Ether) is on the east side of the Sea West, the place they began their journey across the Sea West, Moriancumer, would be on a corresponding west side of the Sea West. This would put the sea in the wilderness westward of Moriancumer. The term 'sea' is not plural, so this indicates that there is only one body of water.

ETHER 1:36 [2:13]: And now I proceed with my record; for behold it came to pass that the Lord did bring Jared and his brethren forth even to that great sea which divideth the lands.

Commentary: This verse references the places of the Sea West. The term 'I' refers to Moroni. The phrase 'great sea which divideth the lands' refers to the Sea West.

ETHER 1:37 [2:13]: And as they came to the sea, they pitched their tents; and they called the name of the place Moriancumer; and they dwelt in tents; and dwelt in tents upon the sea-shore for the space of four years.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Moriancumer, the sea in the wilderness, and the Sea West. Moriancumer is located on Sea West seashore after having crossed the sea in the wilderness.
