Commentaries (view it on a map)

I NEPHI 5:18 [16:14]: And we did go forth again, in the wilderness, following the same direction, keeping in the most fertile parts of the wilderness, which were in the borders near the Red Sea.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom, the Red Sea, Shazer, and the wilderness near the Red Sea. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. The phrase 'same direction' indicates they were still heading in a 'south, south-east direction' as stated in I Nephi 5:16 [16:13] from Shazer to Nahom. The wilderness near the Red Sea extends to this point and they are still near the Red Sea.

I NEPHI 5:19 [16:15]: And it came to pass that we did travel for the space of many days, slaying food by the way, with our bows and our arrows, and our stones and our slings;

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom and Shazer. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. They were traveling from Shazer to Nahom. The phrase 'travel for the space of many days' indicates that Nahom is not near Shazer.

I NEPHI 5:21 [16:17]: And after we had traveled for the space of many days, we did pitch our tents for the space of a time, that we might again rest ourselves and obtain food for our families.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom, the Red Sea, Shazer, and an unnamed mountain. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. The phrase 'traveled for the space of many days' is in addition to already having traveled many days between Shazer and Nahom. Nahom is not near Shazer. This location is near an unnamed mountain.

I NEPHI 5:37 [16:30]: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the directions which were given upon the ball.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom, the Red Sea, Shazer, and an unnamed mountain. The mountain is near the Red Sea in between Shazer and Nahom.

I NEPHI 5:42 [16:33]: And it came to pass that we did again take our journey, traveling nearly the same course as in the beginning;

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom and Shazer. The phrase 'same course' indicates they were still heading in a 'south, south-east direction' as stated in I Nephi 5:16 [16:13] from Shazer to Nahom. This course is still near the Red Sea.

I NEPHI 5:43 [16:33]: And after we had traveled for the space of many days, we did pitch our tents again, that we might tarry for the space of a time.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom and the Red Sea. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. They were still traveling along the Red Sea. They stopped at a place named Nahom. The phrase 'traveled for the space of many days' is addition to other verses that stated traveling for many days. This puts Nahom near the southern portion of the Red Sea.

I NEPHI 5:44 [16:34]: And it came to pass that Ishmael died, and was buried in the place which was called Nahom.

Commentary: This verse references the place of Nahom. This verse names the place as Nahom.

I NEPHI 5:55 [17:1]: And it came to pass that we did again take our journey in the wilderness; and we did travel nearly eastward, from that time forth.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Nahom, the Red Sea, and the wilderness near the Red Sea. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. The wilderness near the Red Sea extended as far south as Nahom.

I NEPHI 5:61 [17:4]: And we did sojourn for the space of many years, yea, even eight years in the wilderness.

Commentary: This verse references the places of Bountiful, Nahom, and the wilderness near the Red Sea. The term 'we' refers to Lehi and the people with him. They traveled for eight years in the wilderness between Nahom on the Red Sea and the land Bountiful on the shores of the Sea Irreantum. The wilderness near the Red Sea either extended a substantial distance away from the Red Sea or Lehi stayed fairly close to the Red Sea for a number of years.
