Origins of the Topic
While many people will try to say same sex relations is OK, God's doctrine is clear that it is not permitted.
Discussions about what the Bible really says about same sex relationships will try to twist the meanings of the words used in the Bible. However, the scriptures are consistent in stating that it is against God's doctrine.
Commentary: Commentary: To judge what is a sin requires determining the root desire for the act. See the topic on Sin to understand that God's doctrine is unselfishness and sin is selfishness. Same sex relationships have a root desire of selfishness (sex for the sole purpose of pleasure). Heterosexual relations produce children, which the scriptures identify as adding to the glory of God (meaning bringing more people to the understanding of God).

Sex between men was one of the sins why God destroyed Sodom - Key Verse - |
---|
Genesis 19:4-13 [4] But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: [5] And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. [6] And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, [7] And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. [8] Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. [9] And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. [10] But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. [11] And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. [12] And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: [13] For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the Lord; and the Lord hath sent us to destroy it. Commentary: Verse 5 uses "know" (Hebrew <yada`>, Strongs 3045) the same as it is used in Genesis 4:1, And Adam knew <yada`> Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain. This is a description not only of the intent of men wanting to have sex with a man, but also rape.

Same sex relationships are an abomination - Key Verse - |
---|
Leviticus 18:22 - Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Commentary: The Hebrew word for "abomination" <tow`ebah> (Strong's 8441) is defined as "especially used of things which are made impure and illicit" - it is also "used of things belonging to the worship of idols and of idols themselves"
|
Same sex relationships are an abomination - Key Verse - |

Leviticus 20:13 - If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. |
Same sex relationships have no part in following God's Word |
---|
Deuteronomy 23:17 - There shall be no whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a Sodomite of the sons of Israel.
Commentary: The term "Sodomite" (Strong's 6945) is a general purpose term and not specifically directed at the city of Sodom. The roots of the Hebrew word for sodomite <qadesh> comes from the same Assyrian word for male temple prostitutes that dressed as women "to ritually prostitute themselves to all men who came to the temple (symbolically to collect fertilizing semen from the deity, and in more practical terms to collect money for maintaining the temple)." While modern translations of the Bible use the term "male temple prostitute" where "sodomite" appears in the KJV, the meaning is not one derived from heterosexual relationships, but from the Assyrian homosexual male temple prostitutes.
The term <qadesh> is also associated with being an abomination in 1 Kings 14:24 (refer to Lev 18:22 and Lev 20:13) and the people who were <qadesh> were banished from Israel in 1 Kings 15:12, 22:47. In Job 36:14, hypocrites in their heart (godless people) die among the <qadesh>. In all occurences of <qadesh>, the result is those persons do not end up in the presence of God. |

Women lusting for women and men lusting for men break the covenant - Key Verse - |
---|
Romans 1:24-32 [24] Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: [25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. [26] For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: [27] And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. [28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; [29] Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, [30] Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, [31] Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: [32] Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Commentary: The term "natural <phusikos> (Strong's G794) use <chresis> (Strong's G5540)" refers to heterosexual relations. The term "unseemly" <aschemosune> (Strong's G808) refers to genitals as well as an "unseemly deed" and the term "working" <katergazomai> (Strong's G2716) refers to "accomplishing" - in this case, men accomplishing an act with their genitals - a homosexual act.

1 Timothy 1:10 - For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
Commentary: The phrase "defile themselves with mankind" refers to same sex relationships.

Strange flesh (same sex relationships) will suffer eternal fire - Key Verse - |
---|
Jude 1:7 - Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
Commentary: The term "strange flesh" refers to same sex relationships. This was one of the sins of Sodom (Genesis 19).

2 Nephi 6:74 - Remember, to be carnally minded, is death, and to be spiritually minded, is life eternal. |

2 Nephi 8:47 - The shew of their countenance doth witness against them, and doth declare their sin to be even as Sodom, and they can not hide it. Wo unto their souls, for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
Commentary: This repeats Isaiah 3:9 and states that the people of Sodom commit sin (including same sex relationships mentioned in Genesis 19 and Jude 1).

Carnal things (including same sex relationships) is against God |
---|
Mosiah 1:119-123 [119] For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been, from the fall of Adam, and will be, for ever and ever; [120] But if he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man, and becometh a saint, through the atonement of Christ, the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father. [121] And moreover, I say unto you, that the time shall come, when the knowledge of a Savior shall spread throughout every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. [122] And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be found blameless before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent; [123] And even at this time, when thou shalt have taught thy people the things which the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, even then are they found no more blameless in the sight of God, only according to the words which I have spoken unto thee. Commentary: God has given many commandments to do or not do, and same sex relationships was specifically a commandment not to do (Leviticus 18 and 20).

Carnal activities are without God |
---|
Alma 19:74-7 [74] Behold, I say unto you, Wickedness never was happiness. [75] And now, my son, all men that are in a state of nature, or I would say, in a carnal state, are in the gall of bitterness, and in the bonds of iniquity; they are without God in the world, and they have gone contrary to the nature of God; therefore they are in a state contrary to the nature of happiness. [76] And now behold, is the meaning of the word restoration, to take a thing of a natural state, and place it in an unnatural state, or to place it in a state opposite to its nature? [77] O, my son, this is not the case; but the meaning of the word restoration, is to bring back again evil for evil, or carnal for carnal, or devilish for devilish; good for that which is good; righteous for that which is righteous; just for that which is just; merciful for that which is merciful; Commentary: A carnal state is contrary to happiness. This seems contrary to the reported "happiness" that sinners experience when committing sinful acts, but that "happiness" is temporary and ends when they stop the sinful act, meaning that it is not true happiness, but lust. Whereas, true happiness is lasting and lasts after a righteous act.

Pastors holding credentials in a conference of Mennonite Church USA may not perform a same-sex covenant ceremony. Such action would be grounds for review of their credentials by their area conference’s ministerial credentialing body. (See A Mennonite Polity for Ministerial Leadership, p. 125)

Report of the Theology Committee, The Gift of Sexuality: A Theological Perspective:
[4.5] We also recognize there is a range of sexual identities among human beings, and a portion of the population experiences itself as having a homosexual orientation. As Christians, we affirm that persons of all sexual orientations are created in the image of God, and they are full members of the human family. The Church vigorously denounces discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation, and we call upon all members of our society, and especially members of the body of Christ, to honor their baptismal vow to respect the full humanity and dignity of every human being (BCP 305).
[5.0] The Episcopal Church, and the larger Anglican Communion, belongs to the tradition of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church, and we are thereby bound by the decisions of the first Four Ecumenical Councils. These decided the Trinitarian identity of the one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Creator of heaven and earth; and the full humanity and full divinity of Christ. These two great doctrines anchor the Church in orthodoxy. As Anglicans we further believe Christian unity is grounded in the principles of the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral (BCP 876-878). It is our conviction that only those issues that undermine these foundational doctrines and commitments should constitute grounds for separation within the Church.
[5.8] Regardless of the origin of homosexuality, there are at least two contrary positions regarding homosexual intimacy: (1) Homosexual genital expression is always sinful and is not acceptable within the Christian ethic. (2) Some homosexual genital expression is legitimate and Christians should lend pastoral support for such relationships. Neither the complexities nor the issues end here.
[8.1] For these reasons, we believe it is imperative that the Episcopal Church refrain from any attempt to "settle" the matter legislatively.

Commentary: The statement that all sexual orientations are of God contradicts the scriptures. Only using a subset of the scriptures as a basis of separation from the church is against God's Word which He expects to be fulfilled in it's entirety. The intent that a matter of scripture should not be legislated when God legislates His commandments is not consistent with the scriptures. The entire report is "yea and nay" which the scriptures state specifically leads to evil.

RLDS Doctrine and Covenants Section 2:2a-b - [2a] Remember, remember, that it is not the work of God that is frustrated, but the work of men; [2b] for although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet, if he boast in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him.

May, 2023 - SUPPORTING 2SLGBTQIA+ ADVOCACY AND FULL INCLUSION IN THE USA - In April 2013, the USA Community of Christ National Conference voted to support same-sex marriage and ordination for persons in same-sex marriages. It was a monumental and necessary step towards widening the circle of inclusion and unity in diversity. The journey towards full participation of 2SLGBTQIA+ persons in the life and ministry of our church is one of ongoing learning, listening, and loving.
May 9, 2009 Letter from the First Presidency - The language of WCR 1182 does not provide authorization for ministers of the Community of Christ to perform marriages between two persons of the same sex, even in jurisdictions where such marriages are legally valid. The resolution does, however, provide for the recognition of legally valid marriages. Thus, a same-sex marriage may be entered into the church records as a legal fact, just as in other instances where the church recognizes legally valid marriages that it may not choose to solemnize.

Book of Discipline: 304. Qualifications for Ordination - While persons set apart by the Church for ordained ministry are subject to all the frailties of the human condition and the pressures of society, they are required to maintain the highest standards of holy living in the world. The practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching. Therefore self-avowed practicing homosexuals1 are not to be certified as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in The United Methodist Church.
What is the Church's position on homosexuality? Underlying this is the constitutional principle of inclusiveness of the church. Everyone is welcome to worship and actively participate in the life of our churches. Laypersons may become members and live out their faith through their local church without respect to sexual orientation or practice.

The apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:9, “… do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals … will inherit the kingdom of God.” And so, homosexuality clearly is a sin. There are many other passages that teach the same thing.
Yet, to believe that homosexuality is a sin does not mean that the homosexual is to be hated. We firmly believe that no one is to be hated. But we do believe that it is biblical to call homosexuals to repentance, to faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and by the abiding power of the Holy Spirit to fight against sin.

Letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons. Against the background of this exposition of theocratic law, an eschatological perspective is developed by St. Paul when, in I Cor 6:9, he proposes the same doctrine and lists those who behave in a homosexual fashion among those who shall not enter the Kingdom of God...In Romans 1:18-32, still building on the moral traditions of his forebears, but in the new context of the confrontation between Christianity and the pagan society of his day, Paul uses homosexual behaviour as an example of the blindness which has overcome humankind. Instead of the original harmony between Creator and creatures, the acute distortion of idolatry has led to all kinds of moral excess. Paul is at a loss to find a clearer example of this disharmony than homosexual relations. Finally, 1 Tim. 1, in full continuity with the Biblical position, singles out those who spread wrong doctrine and in v. 10 explicitly names as sinners those who engage in homosexual acts.
Commentary: The specific citations of the scriptures that speak against homosexuality are, obviously, consistent with the scriptures.

Seventh-day Adventist Response to Same-Sex Unions--A Reaffirmation of Christian Marriage - We reaffirm, without hesitation, our long-standing position as expressed in the Church’s Fundamental Beliefs: “Marriage was divinely established in Eden and affirmed by Jesus to be a lifelong union between a man and a woman in loving companionship.”1 Though “sin has perverted God’s ideals for marriage and family,” “the family tie is the closest, the most tender and sacred of any human relationship,” and thus “families need to experience renewal and reformation in their relationships” (An Affirmation of Family, 1990).2 God instituted “marriage, a covenant-based union of two genders [male and female] physically, emotionally, and spiritually, spoken of in Scripture as ‘one flesh.'” “The monogamous union in marriage of a man and a woman is . . . the only morally appropriate locus of genital or related intimate sexual expression.” “Any lowering of this high view is to that extent a lowering of the heavenly ideal” (An Affirmation of Marriage, 1996).
Commentary: These statements about marriage and same sex relationships are consistent with the scriptures.

XVIII. The Family - Marriage is the uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God’s unique gift to reveal the union between Christ and His church and to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race.
