Is there

Life After Death?

What Happens After We Die?

Questions

Is Death forever?

Is there a Heaven and Hell? Where will I go?

Does everyone go to Heaven?

I'm not religious - what happens to me?

Does what I do in life affect me after death?

Will I face some kind of judgment?

Many people have those questions. To get a better picture of what happens after death, let us look at your entire life - where you came from, where you are right now, and then your options for life after death. The choices that you make now will determine where you end up at the end. The path to Celestial Glory in Heaven can only be achieved through Jesus Christ.

4. Life takes multiple paths. Some people never hear about God's Word, so they are ignorant of their options. Some people hear God's Word and do not accept it. Some people hear God's Word and reject it. Some people hear God's Word and do accept it - and get baptised. Regardless of which path a person takes, God has a plan for everyone.

Alma 9:41 Therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state, which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead.

8a Sh'owl / Hades / Prison (Hell)

8a. Sh'owl / Hades / Prison (Hell)
(Tap to Expand)

8a. Sh'owl / Hades / Prison (Hell) are terms that encompass all of the dead - those in Paradise, those in Lower Hell, and those in the bottommless Pit. Both the righteous and unrighteous end up in <sh'owl>. Death is the prison that none can escape except through the atonement of Jesus Christ. Sh'owl is the Hebrew term and Hades is the Greek term for the same place. Both terms are traslated as "Hell" in the King James Bible.

Genesis 37:34-35
Genesis 37:34 And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
Genesis 37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave <sh'owl> unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

D&C Section 36:11c and the saints arose and were crowned at the right hand of the Son of man, with crowns of glory; and as many of the spirits as were in prison, came forth and stood on the right hand of God; [the righteous] and the remainder were reserved in chains of darkness until the judgment of the great day.

Psalm 9:17 The wicked shall be turned into hell <sh'owl>, and all the nations that forget God.

There is a mention that Jesus preached to the souls in Hell - Greek <phulake> - which means captives in prison. So, he preached the Gospel to those in the prison (death)

1 Peter 3:18-19
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
1 Peter 3:19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

D&C Section 76:6c Behold, these are they who died without law; and also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it;

9 Lowest Hell (Outer Darkness)

9. Lowest Hell (Outer Darkness)
(Tap to Expand)

9. There are at least two parts of hell. One part is called the Lowest Hell or Outer Darkness.

Matthew 8:12 But the children of the wicked one shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

For the faithless and those that worshp other gods, God mentions that even those in the lowest hell will feel His anger.

Deuteronomy 32:17-22
32:17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
32:18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.
32:19 And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.
32:20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.
32:21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.
32:22 For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest <tachtiy> hell <sh'owl>, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.

9a Bottomless Pit

9a. Bottomless Pit
(Tap to Expand)

9a. One of the words for "hell" in the New Testament is the Greek word <tartaroo>. <tartaroo> is a pit within Hell where the Devil and fallen angels are thrown and shackled with "everlasting chains" or "chains of darkness".

2:4-9
2 Pet 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell <tartaroo>, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
2:5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
2:8 (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;)
2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

Here we have a description that the bottomless pit is within <sh'owl>.

Isaiah 14:15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell <sh'owl>, to the sides of the pit.

There are angels and people that prove themselves to be reprobate (worthless - literally or morally) and the Lord sends them to the bottomless pit to await judgment.

Jude 1:6-7
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

10. There is a separation between Paradise and Lower Hell that prevents souls from moving between those realms.

Luke 16:26 ...between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence [in paradise] to you [in lowest hell] cannot; neither can they [in lowest hell] pass to us [in paradise], that would come from thence

11 Paradise

11. Paradise
(Tap to Expand)

11. There is a realm where those who are righteous (who follow God's Word) remain until they are resurrected.

Alma 19:44 And then shall it come to pass that the spirits of those who are righteous, are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise; a state of rest; a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles, and from all care, and sorrow,

The location of paradise is in the heart of the earth. Jesus went to Paradise first and did not ascend to Heaven until after his resurrection.

Matthew 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Ephesians 4:6-10
4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
4:9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
4:10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

12 Gates of Hell

12. Gates of Hell
(Tap to Expand)

12. Another Greek word for Hell used in the scriptures is <haides>. <haides> refers to the same concept as the Hebrew <sh'owl> which is a place that encompasses all of the dead. The Gates of Hell are the gates (i.e. prison bars) that separate the place of the dead from the world of the living. A resurrection is when souls and their reconstructed bodies pass through the gates and come back into the world of the living. The church (assembly) of the people that believe the Word of God will not be held hostage by death - that the gates of hell shall not keep them hostage in prison.

Doctrine & Covenants (D&C) Section 15:3b and if you do these last commandments of mine, which I have given you, the gates of hell <haides> shall not prevail against you; for my grace is sufficient for you; and you shall be lifted up at the last day.

Matthew 16:15-18
16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Here we have a description of the gates being between the living and the dead.

Isaiah 38:10 I said in the cutting off of my days, I shall go to the gates of the grave <sh'owl>: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

D&C Section 85:27a And there shall be silence in heaven for the space of half an hour, and immediately after shall the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled;

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:
4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

15 Resurrection of the First Fruits

15. Resurrection of the First Fruits
(Tap to Expand)

15. At the arrival of Jesus Christ, anyone alive will be transfigured (to quicken is "to be healed, to cause to live") in just one moment from a corruptible body to an incorruptible body. The dead who had been baptized and endured to the end of their mortal life and stayed on the narrow path will be resurrected and meet Jesus as He descends from Heaven.

1 Corinthians 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

John 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

D&C Section 85:27b-c and the saints that are upon the earth, who are alive, shall be quickened, and be caught up to meet him. And they who have slept in their graves, shall come forth; for their graves shall be opened, and they also shall be caught up to meet him in the midst of the pillar of heaven: they are Christ's, the first fruits:

1 Cor 15:51-54
15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

1 Corinthians 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

18 Earth Cleansed

18. Earth Cleansed
(Tap to Expand)

18. The Earth will be cleansed of unclean works.

2 Peter 3:10-13
3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Armegeddon occurs just prior to the Earth being cleansed and just prior to the Devil being bound for the 1,000 Year Reign.

Revelation 16:13
16:13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.
16:14 For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.
16:16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

Revelation 19:19-21, 20:1
19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
20:1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

All of the people with unclean hearts will be caught up from where they are and taken to Armageddon. Their defeat at Armageddon will leave the Earth with people that have clean hearts or ignorant of Christ, so those who are alive and quickened at the time of the Resurrection of the First Fruits will be the ones that enter into the Millenial Reign without tasting death (yet).

Luke 17:34
17:34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.
17:35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
17:36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
17:37 And they answered and said unto him, Where, Lord? And he said unto them, Wheresoever the body is, thither will the eagles be gathered together. (Note: The eagles will be the fowls mentioned in Revelation 19:21).

19 Millenial Reign (1,000 Years)

19. Millenial Reign (1,000 Years)
(Tap to Expand)

19. The Millenial Reign will be those people that have shown that they are true disciples of Jesus. The Millenial Reign will also be those who were alive at the time of Jesus' Coming (both disciplies and non-disciples) and those who never heard God's Word (those ignorant of God's Word). The purpose of the disciples (both alive and resurrected) is to teach God's Word (be priests) to all of those who are not disciples so they may choose to follow God's Word or not.

Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy are they who have part in the first resurrection; on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

The Milelenial Reign will be characterized by peace.

Isaiah 65:17-25
65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
65:18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy.
65:19 And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.
65:20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
65:21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.
65:22 They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
65:23 They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.
65:24 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
65:25 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.

Section 85:29b and these are the rest of the dead, and they live not again until the thousand years are ended, neither again, until the end of the earth.

2 Nephi 6:31-36
6:31 O how great the plan of our God! For on the other hand, the paradise of God must deliver up the spirits of the righteous, and the grave deliver up the bodies of the righteous;
6:32 And the spirit and the body is restored to itself again, and all men become incorruptible, and immortal, and they are living souls, having a perfect knowledge like unto us, in the flesh;
6:33 Save it be that our knowledge shall be perfect;
6:34 Wherefore, we shall have a perfect knowledge of all our guilt, and our uncleanness, and our nakedness;
6:35 And the righteous shall have a perfect knowledge of their enjoyment, and their righteousness, being clothed with purity, yea, even with the robe of righteousness.
6:36 And it shall come to pass, that when all men shall have passed from this first death unto life, insomuch as they have become immortal, they must appear before the judgment seat of the Holy One of Israel;

A Fourth Trump will then sound to proclaim those that remain filthy.

D&C Section 85:30 And another trump shall sound, which is the fourth trump, saying, These are found among those who are to remain until that great and last day, even the end, who shall remain filthy still.

A Fifth Trump will then sound to proclaim the everlasting gospel to everyone so that none can say that they did not hear it and to announce that the time of judgment has come.

D&C Section 85:31a-c
85:31a And another trump shall sound, which is the fifth trump, which is the fifth angel who committeth the everlasting gospel, flying through the midst of heaven, unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people;
85:31b and this shall be the sound of his trump, saying to all people, both in heaven and in earth, and that are under the earth; for every ear shall hear it, and every knee shall bow, and every tongue shall confess, while they hear the sound of the trump, saying,
85:31c Fear God, and give glory to him who sitteth upon the throne, for ever and ever: for the hour of his judgment is come.

A Sixth Trump will then sound to proclaim that the church of the devil is no more.

D&C Section 85:32 And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the sixth angel, saying, She is fallen, who made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication: she is fallen! is fallen!

A Seventh Trump will then sound to proclaim that all is finished - the only thing left is the judgment.

D&C Section 85:33a And again, another angel shall sound his trump, which is the seventh angel, saying: It is finished! it is finished! the Lamb of God hath overcome, and trodden the wine press alone; even the wine press of the fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God;

76:4c for they are vessels of wrath, doomed to suffer the wrath of God, with the Devil and his angels, in eternity, concerning whom I have said there is no forgiveness in this world nor in the world to come;
76:4d having denied the Holy Spirit, after having received it, and having denied the only begotten Son of the Father; having crucified him unto themselves, and put him to an open shame:

26. Every person has free agency to make their own choices. Some will choose the Gospel with all of their hearts. Some will choose the Gospel but not be valiant in their acceptance of the Gospel. Some choose the Gospel, but only in a minimal way. And, we have seen that those who do not choose the Gospel will incur a second death. Those that choose the Gospel in a minimal way are described as being the light of a star - you can see it, but it is a dim light.

1 Corinthians 15:39-42
15:39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
15:40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.
15:41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:

D&C Section 76:7l-m
Section 76:7l And the glory of the telestial is one, even as the glory of the stars is one, for as one star differs from another star in glory, even so differs one from another in glory in the telestial world; for these are they who are of Paul, and of Apollos, and of Cephas;
Section 76:7m these are they who say they are some of one and some of another, some of Christ, and some of John, and some of Moses, and some of Elias; and some of Esais, and some of Isaiah, and some of Enoch, but received not the gospel, neither the testimony of Jesus, neither the prophets; neither the everlasting covenant;

27. As mentioned in 1 Corinthians 15:40, people will have a different glory based on what they choose. Those people who are not valiant in their testimony of the Gospel are described as having the glory of the light of the moon.

1 Corinthians 15:40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

D&C Section 76:6b-g
76:6b these are they who are of the terrestrial, whose glory differs from that of the church of the Firstborn, who have received the fullness of the Father, even as that of the moon differs from the sun of the firmament.
76:6c Behold, these are they who died without law; and also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it;
76:6d these are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men:
76:6e these are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fullness;
76:6f these are they who receive of the presence of the Son, but not of the fullness of the Father; wherefore they are bodies terrestrial, and not bodies celestial, and differ in glory as the moon differs from the sun;
76:6g these are they who are not valiant in the testimony of Jesus; wherefore they obtained not the crown over the kingdom of our God.

1 Corinthians 15:40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

D&C Section 76:5a-r
76:5a And again, we bear record for we saw and heard, and this is the testimony of the gospel of Christ, concerning them who come forth in the resurrection of the just:
76:5b They are they who received the testimony of Jesus, and believed on his name, and were baptized after the manner of his burial, being buried in the water in his name, and this according to the commandment which he has given, that by keeping the commandments, they might be washed and cleansed from all their sins,
76:5c and receive the Holy Spirit by the laying on of the hands of him who is ordained and sealed unto this power;
76:5d and who overcome by faith, and are sealed by that Holy Spirit of promise, which the Father sheds forth upon all those who are just and true;
76:5e they are they who are the church of the Firstborn;
76:5f they are they into whose hands the Father has given all things:
76:5g they are they who are priests and kings, who have received of his fullness, and of his glory, and are priests of the Most High after the order of Melchisedec, which was after the order of Enoch, which was after the order of the only begotten Son:
76:5h wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God; wherefore all things are theirs, whether life or death, or things present, or things to come, all are theirs, and they are Christ's, and Christ is God's; and they shall overcome all things;
76:5i wherefore let no man glory in man, but rather let him glory in God, who shall subdue all enemies under his feet;
76:5j these shall dwell in the presence of God and his Christ for ever and ever:
76:5k these are they whom he shall bring with him, when he shall come in the clouds of heaven, to reign on the earth over his people;
76:5l these are they who shall have part in the first resurrection;
76:5m these are they who shall come forth in the resurrection of the just;
76:5n these are they who are come unto Mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly place, the holiest of all;
76:5o these are they who have come to an innumerable company of angels; to the general assembly and church of Enoch, and of the Firstborn;
76:5p these are they whose names are written in heaven, where God and Christ are the judge of all;
76:5q these are they who are just men made perfect through Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, who wrought out this perfect atonement through the shedding of his own blood;
76:5r these are they whose bodies are celestial, whose glory is that of the sun, even the glory of God the highest of all; whose glory the sun of the firmament is written of as being typical.
