Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt
  3. Cut in the margerine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs
  4. Add the egg whites and vanilla (sprinkled around the flour mixture)
  5. Add the condensed milk directly from the can - start with about ⅓ cup and mix it in - add a tbsp at a time until the mixture just becomes wet (no more dry ingredients) - this will be a very sticky ball
  6. Gently combine the diced apple pieces
  7. Lightly oil a cooking sheet
  8. Drop a spoonful of the mixture on the pan - mush down the center so it is flat (about ½-inch thick)
  9. Bake for 11 - 13 minutes
  10. While the fritters are baking, in a small bowl, add the powdered sugar and vanilla
  11. Pour the condensed milk directly from the can - start with about a tbsp - mix well - the sugar will make a ball
  12. Cut in more condensed milk until all the sugar is just wet and the ball slowly flattens - this will be a very thick frosting
  13. Remove the fritters from the oven and set the oven to Broil
  14. Spoon about 1 tsp to 1 ½ tsp of the glaze over the top ⅔ of each fritter - it will require two spoons to scrape some glaze from the bowl and place the glaze on a fritter - spread the glaze over the top of the fritter with one of the spoons - the glaze should cover about ⅔ of the fritter - the next step will cause the glaze to spread over the entire top of the fritter
  15. Put the fritters back in the oven (middle rack - not the top rack position) - watch for the glaze to start bubbling and start to brown (about 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on your oven and rack setting) - WATCH the fritters closely
  16. Remove and let cool - the sugar glaze should be slightly browned
