Directions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt
- Cut in the margerine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs
- Add the egg whites and vanilla (sprinkled around the flour mixture)
- Add the condensed milk directly from the can - start with about ⅓ cup and mix it in - add a tbsp at a time until the mixture just becomes wet (no more dry ingredients) - this will be a very sticky ball
- Gently combine the diced apple pieces
- Lightly oil a cooking sheet
- Drop a spoonful of the mixture on the pan - mush down the center so it is flat (about ½-inch thick)
- Bake for 11 - 13 minutes
- While the fritters are baking, in a small bowl, add the powdered sugar and vanilla
- Pour the condensed milk directly from the can - start with about a tbsp - mix well - the sugar will make a ball
- Cut in more condensed milk until all the sugar is just wet and the ball slowly flattens - this will be a very thick frosting
- Remove the fritters from the oven and set the oven to Broil
- Spoon about 1 tsp to 1 ½ tsp of the glaze over the top ⅔ of each fritter - it will require two spoons to scrape some glaze from the bowl and place the glaze on a fritter - spread the glaze over the top of the fritter with one of the spoons - the glaze should cover about ⅔ of the fritter - the next step will cause the glaze to spread over the entire top of the fritter
- Put the fritters back in the oven (middle rack - not the top rack position) - watch for the glaze to start bubbling and start to brown (about 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending on your oven and rack setting) - WATCH the fritters closely
- Remove and let cool - the sugar glaze should be slightly browned
Comments
- This is good for mornings (instead of a donut) or as just a dessert to have any time
