Surviving the End Times - Part 3

Survival Basics    Summary

End Times Prophesy

Before Jesus returns, there will be a period of tribulation

2 Timothy
3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3:3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

Commentary: During the period of the tribulation, many people will only care about themselves and hate others.

Things To Consider...
  • The concepts covered should not be assumed to be just for you
  • During the Tribulation period, we are still to preach the Gospel and gain more people for the Lord
  • So, think of everything presented here and what it would take for you and your family
    • Then think of what it would take as the church grows and more people will need support - people who had not planned on this

Survival Basics 101
  • Let's start with survival basics and then look at specific scenarios
  • 7 Key Priorities for Basic Survival - can apply to any situation
    1. S. T. O. P.
    2. First Aid
    3. Shelter
    4. Fire
    5. Signaling
    6. Water
    7. Food
  • Let's look at each one ...

Divider between facts

#1 - S. T. O. P.
  • In any situation - STOP and think and look
  • Assess the situation
  • There is usually no rush to go anywhere
  • Plan your next steps

  • Think about it ...
    • You've been preparing continually for years to meet Jesus
    • How much time have you spent preparing to be able to "endure to the end"?

Divider between facts

#1 - S. T. O. P.
  • You need a plan to get to the end

  • What is your plan?
    • Option A: Just "wing it"?
    • Option B: Wait for it to happen, then plan based on available resources
    • Option C: Establish a plan ahead of time, gather needed resources, and practice your plan
    • Personally, I prefer Option C

Divider between facts

S. T. O. P.
  • Planning

  • Write it down
    • You're not going to remember everything
    • Use this presentation for a general plan then add to it
    • Whenever you think about something you would need, add it to your plan - you won't be able to think about everything in one sitting

  • If you have warning - you can plan for the conditions
  • What if you have no warning? i.e. an Evacuation
    • Unless you have a plan (checklist) already made up, expect to be missing things that will make your life much easier

#2 - First Aid
  • Be able to take care of some basic scenarios on your own
  • What makes a good First Aid kit?
    • Basic bandages (assorted sizes) and antibiotic ointments - nothing fancy
  • The American Red Cross recommends the following items:
    • 2 absorbent compress dressings (5 x 9 inches)
    • 25 adhesive bandages (assorted sizes), also found within our Family First Aid Kit
    • 1 adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch)
    • 5 antibiotic ointment packets (approximately 1 gram)
    • 5 antiseptic wipe packets
    • 2 packets of aspirin (81 mg each)
    • 1 emergency blanket
    • 1 breathing barrier (with one-way valve)
    • 1 instant cold compress
    • 2 pair of nonlatex gloves (size: large)
    • 2 hydrocortisone ointment packets (approximately 1 gram each)
    • 1 3 in. gauze roll (roller) bandage
    • 1 roller bandage (4 inches wide)
    • 5 3 in. x 3 in. sterile gauze pads
    • 5 sterile gauze pads (4 x 4 inches)
    • Oral thermometer (non-mercury/nonglass)
    • 2 triangular bandages
    • Tweezers
    • Emergency First Aid instructions

#3 Shelter
  • Make it easy on yourself - get a tent
  • 3-4 person tent
    • Really fits 2 people - with other gear in addition to sleeping bags
  • Self standing - you may not be in a location where pegs can be driven into the ground
  • About 6 lbs
    • Easy to travel with
  • If possible - get one with a bathtub bottom - the bottom seams are over 3-inches above the ground - they stay drier in the rain
  • Practice and put it up in the daytime first
  • Practice and put it up in the dark - many times it will be dark when you need to set it up
  • Also get an 8' x 10' Tarp to put under the tent to keep the tent bottom dry or the tarp can be used as an additional rain fly (to keep wood dry)
  • If an earthquake damages your house, the tent can be used in the yard or any level place
Tent

#4 Fire
  • Based on the number of uses (before it runs out of fuel)
  • Fresnel Lens (7" x 10") - works as long as the sun shines - summer or winter
    • Will burn a hole in an aluminum can
    • Starts a fire in 1 to 2 seconds
    • You will also need welder's goggles - the focused light is very bright
    • Ignore credit card size lens - they are very difficult to start a fire
    • Tent
  • Arc Lighter (rechargeable)
    • 300 lightings per charge
    • Windproof
    • Get a red color - makes it easier to see it when dropped on the ground
    • Tent
  • Metal Match
  • Tent
  • Strike Anywhere Matches (regular old matches - nothing fancy)
  • Butane lighters
    • Caution: They don't work well below 40°F

Divider between facts

#5 - Signaling
  • The purpose is so someone else can find you
  • In the End Times, you may not want people to find you
  • There will be groups of people seeking to kill you
  • But, if you need to signal to get help or to communicate with someone at a distance
    • Light on your phone
    • LED Flashlight
    • Whistle
    • Signaling Mirror
    • Tie colored fabric to a long branch or your tent poles

Divider between facts

#6 - Water
  • You may not have a quality source for water
  • You need something that will filter quite a bit of water
  • We're talking long periods of time using questionable water quality

  • Hand pump filter (<0.01 micron for viruses)
    • Will work for 100,000 Liters

    • Tent
  • Water tablets are OK for a few uses
    • Doesn't taste that good

Divider between facts

#7 - Food
  • Our current Church food pantry will sustain a group of 50 people for maybe a week or two (with rationing)
    • Need a lot more food if we plan on having the church be a safety haven for people
  • Establish your own 3-month food supply
  • In a time of food shortage, hunting will be of limited help
    • Given the number of guns owned by people, most edible sized animals will probably disappear rather rapidly
    • However, shotguns are the most reliable "food-getter" gun
  • Fishing will be a good source of protein
    • Fishing equipment is needed (line and bait hooks)
  • Farming will be the best option for a long-term food shortage

Divider between facts

#7 - Food / Farming
  • What kinds of food should you farm?
  • It should have a fairly short harvest cycle (in order to get several crops in a year)
  • Should be able to plant many plants in a small space (most yards are not that big)
  • Best option is ....
    • Lentils
  • Next best option is ....
    • Pinto Beans
  • Both are high in
    • Carbs & Protein
    • Nutrition - including micro nutrients (e.g. potassium, magnesium, zinc, folate, etc.)
    • Lentils are high in iron - Pinto beans have the same nutrients as lentils but are low in iron
      • Lentils do not grow very well in hot climates - Pinto beans grow well in hot climates
  • Pinto beans are easy to harvest and store
    • They do not require special tools (like grinding wheels for grains) to make them edible - just need some water, a pot, and a heat source
    • You should get about 1/4 cup of dried beans per plant (approx. 120 beans)
    • Plant beans about 3 inches apart - a 50-foot row should produce about 50 cups of beans
    • Plant beans in rows 2 feet apart - a 50-foot by 20-foot (11 rows) can produce 550 cups of beans
    • Plants can be harvested in about 90 to 100 days
    • In the South, you could get two crops per year
      • A 50 x 20-foot plot could produce 1,100 cups of beans a year
      • If a family of four ate one cup of beans per day per person - 1,100 cups would feed them for a little over 9 months
      • You would need a 50-foot x 28-foot plot to grow enough Pinto beans under optimal conditions for a family of four to have enough beans for one year

Other Useful Items
  • Rope - Braided - at least 100-foot
    • Uses for rope
    • Don't cut it unless you absolutely have to - find the ways you can use it without cutting it
    • A cut rope never gets longer
  • Tubing - useful for many things
    • Siphon water, siphon gas, create a shower
  • Safety Pins
  • Waterproof dry bag

So far - what can we survive?
What level of situation do you want to survive?

Event Scenarios to Plan For
Hunger
  • Some groceries not on the shelves for a short time (think COVID-19)
  • Groceries not on the shelves for a long time
Earthquake
  • Natural disasters (i.e. tornados - things get back to "normal" fairly soon)
  • Natural disasters (i.e. earthquakes - will take months to fix things)
Peace Taken
  • Individuals or small groups trying to take your things or do you harm
  • Large groups trying to take your things or do you harm
Killed by Beasts
  • Animals trying to do you harm
Not Buy or Sell
  • The ability to purchase items (but no credit/debit, only cash/gold)
  • No ability to purchase items (living off-grid)
All the Above
  • Able to stay in your house
  • Need to gather together in the same city (i.e. for protection)
  • Need to gather in a different city (requiring travelling a distance)
  • Combinations of all the above
  • You can handle this scenario with what we've covered
  • You can handle some of this, but there is still more to cover
