Satan's Limitations

Old Testament    New Testament    Book of Mormon    Statements of Belief

Origins of the Topic

What can Satan NOT tell you to do?
God has no limitations, but how can you identify Satan and determine what comes from God and what comes from Satan?

Commentary: God's Word provides instruction of what we should do. God also gave mankind free agency to act on our own. As the scriptures show, Satan has no power over mankind except that he deceives people to use their free agency to perform works that are against God's Word.

Old Testament

God commands us to love Him
Deuteronomy 30:15-16
[15] See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil;
[16] In that I command thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply; and the Lord thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

A person can choose to bear false witness
Proverbs 14:5 - A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

People will twist the truth to make it sound like evil and make evil sound true - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Isaiah 5:20 - Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

God created Satan. He has control over evil - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Isaiah 45:7 - I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
Commentary: This indicates that God created Satan (evil). God has control over the extent that evil can enter our lives.

People can lie and tell false prophesies to deceive other people - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Jeremiah 23:32 - Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the Lord.

God cast Satan to the ground and will eventually destroy him. God has control over Satan - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ezekiel 28:12-19
[12] Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.
[13] Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the Beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.
[14] Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
[15] Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
[16] By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
[17] Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.
[18] Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
[19] All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.

Commentary: This tells us a number of attributes that Lucifer had; He was created, which means that he did not exist before God had created him. He did not exist before time as God did. He was a guardian Cherub (one of the highest forms of angels) the Hebrew word for "covers" in the sentence '...cherub who covers' means protection or guard so we can deduce that Lucifer was a Guardian Angel. We also read that before he rebelled he was in the Garden of Eden. He began to use his own wisdom rather than relay on God's wisdom. He began to seek after wordly things (his beauty).

It doesn't matter how a person appears. A person's actions is the way to tell what type of person they are - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Matthew 7:25-29
[25] Ye shall know them by their fruits; for do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
[26] Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
[27] A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
[28] Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
[29] Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Satan cannot deceive people to destroy Satan, or to not tell lies, or to do good works, or anything that would be against Satan - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Matthew 12:25-26
[25] And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
[26] And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Commentary: Satan cannot say that evil is evil or for people not to do evil. To do so would divide his kingdom. These verses are duplicated in Mark and Luke:

Mark 3:23-26 [23] And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? [24] And if a kingdom be divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. [25] And if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand. [26] And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end.

Luke 11:17-20 [17] But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. [18] If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. [19] And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. [20] But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

Anything that is against the Gospel is a weed (tare)
Matthew 13:38-39
[38] The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
[39] The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Commentary: These are verses 37-38 in the Bible (Inspired Version).

Satan promotes things that are selfish - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Matthew 16:23 - But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Commentary: Reference Matthew 6:21, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."

Divider between facts

A good person is unselfish. An evil person is selfish. See Sin (Matthew 6:21-24) - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Luke 6:44-45
[44] For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
[45] A good man out of the good treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is good. And an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth that which is evil; for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

Divider between facts

Satan always lies and pursues selfishness - Key Verse - Key Scripture
John 8:44 - Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Divider between facts

Satan promotes selfishness
Acts 5:1-3
[1] But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
[2] And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
[3] But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

The wiles of the devil promote darkness (selfishness). We can stand against Satan by following God's Word - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ephesians 6:11-12
[11] Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
[12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Evil people will twist God's Gospel from things that are unselfish to things that are selfish - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Romans 1:16-26
[16] For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
[17] For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
[18] For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
[19] Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
[20] For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
[21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
[23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
[24] Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
[25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
[26] For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Satan and his followers can appear as good. But, their works will will tell exactly what they are - Key Verse - Key Scripture
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
[13] For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
[14] And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
[15] Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Divider between facts

The followers of Satan take pleasure in unrighteousness (selfishness) - Key Verse - Key Scripture
2 Thessalonians 2:8-12
[8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
[9] Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
[10] And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
[11] And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
[12] That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

People will believe (with their free will) seducing spirits and lies - Key Verse - Key Scripture
1 Timothy 4:1-4
[1] Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
[2] Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
[3] Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.
[4] For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:

The fear of death is one reason that people will believe the devil - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Hebrews 2:14-15
[14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
[15] And deliver them, who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

The children of the devil are unrighteous (selfish) and do not love other people - Key Verse - Key Scripture
1 John 3:8-11
[8] He that continueth in sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
[9] Whosoever is born of God doth not continue in sin; for the Spirit of God remaineth in him; and he cannot continue in sin, because he is born of God, having received that holy Spirit of promise.
[10] In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil; whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
[11] For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

God is unselfish (light) and has no selfishness (darkness) in Him - Key Verse - Key Scripture
1 John 1:5-6
[5] This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
[6] If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

People of Satan speak of worldy things
1 John 4:4-8
[4] Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
[5] They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
[6] We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
[7] Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. [8] He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

Commentary: Compare this to 2 Corinthinas 11:13-15 where, even if Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, his actions will determine his true identity.

2 Nephi 1:101-104
[101] And I, Lehi, according to the things which I have read, must needs suppose that an angel of God, according to that which is written, had fallen from heaven;
[102] Wherefore he became a devil, having sought that which was evil before God.
[103] And because he had fallen from heaven, and had become miserable for ever, he sought also the misery of all mankind.
[104] Wherefore, he said, unto Eve, yea, even that old serpent, who is the devil, who is the father of all lies; wherefore he said, Partake of the forbidden fruit, and ye shall not die, but ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

[123] And be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit,
[124] And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein,

If there is no resurrection, then we become like the devil
2 Nephi 6:20-22
[20] For behold, if the flesh should rise no more, our spirits must become subject to that angel who fell from before the presence of the eternal God, and became the devil, to rise no more.
[21] And our spirits must have become like unto him, and we become devils, angels to a devil, to be shut out from the presence of our God, and to remain with the father of lies, in misery, like unto himself;
[22] Yea, to that being who beguiled our first parents;

[68] Therefore, if a man bringeth forth good works, he hearkeneth unto the voice of the good shepherd; and he doth follow him;
[69] But whosoever bringeth forth evil works, the same becometh a child of the devil; for he hearkeneth unto his voice, and doth follow him.

It is by free will that people allow themselves to be convinced to do evil - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Alma 8:35-43
[35] And now it came to pass that the people were more angry with Amulek, and they cried out saying: This man doth revile against our laws, which are just, and our wise lawyers whom we have selected.
[36] But Amulek stretched forth his hand, and cried the mightier unto them, saying: O ye wicked and perverse generation; why hath Satan got such great hold upon your hearts?
[37] Why will ye yield yourselves unto him that he may have power over you, to blind your eyes, that ye will not understand the words which are spoken, according to their truth?
[38] For behold, have I testified against your law?
[39] Ye do not understand; ye say that I have spoken against your law; but I have not; but I have spoken in favor of your law, to your condemnation.
[40] And now behold, I say unto you, that the foundation of the destruction of this people is beginning to be laid by the unrighteousness of your lawyers and your judges.
[41] And now it came to pass that when Amulek had spoken these words, the people cried out against him, saying, Now we know that this man is a child of the devil, for he hath lied unto us; for he hath spoken against our law.
[42] And now he says that he has not spoken against it.
[43] And again; he has reviled against our lawyers, and our judges, etc.

The devil is very subtle when deceiving people. His only power is lying and subtlety - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Alma 9:3-6

[4] For behold, he knows all thy thoughts; and thou seest that thy thoughts are made known unto us by his Spirit;
[5] And thou seest that we know that thy plan was a very subtle plan, as to the subtlety of the devil, for to lie and to deceive this people, that thou mightest set them against us, to revile us and to cast us out.

[67] But, behold the devil hath deceived me; for he appeared unto me in the form of an angel, and said unto me, Go and reclaim this people, for they have all gone astray after an unknown God.
[68] And he said unto me, There is no God; yea, and he taught me that which I should say. And I have taught his words; and I taught them, because they were pleasing unto the carnal mind;

Satan stirs up people until they begin to deny that which is good
Helaman 5:137-138
[137] And they were much disturbed, for Satan did stir them up to do iniquity continually; yea, he did go about, spreading rumors and contentions upon all the face of the land, that he might harden the hearts of the people against that which was good, and against that which should come;
[138] And notwithstanding the signs and the wonders which were wrought among the people of the Lord, and the many miracles which they did, Satan did get great hold upon the hearts of the people, upon all the face of the land.

Followers of Satan use lies to deceive people
3 Nephi 1:25-26
[25] And it came to pass that from this time forth, there began to be lyings sent forth among the people by Satan, to harden their hearts, to the intent that they might not believe in those signs and wonders which they had seen;
[26] But notwithstanding those lyings and deceivings, the more part of the people did believe, and were converted unto the Lord.

The greatest power that Satan has is to stir people up and convince them to seek selfishness and the things of the world - Key Verse - Key Scripture
3 Nephi 3:17-18
[17] Now the cause of this iniquity of the people, was this: Satan had great power, unto the stirring up of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world.
[18] And thus Satan did lead away the hearts of the people, to do all manner of iniquity; therefore they had not enjoyed peace but a few years.

Satan has no power over those that are righteous - Key Verse - Key Scripture
3 Nephi 13:49-52
[49] And now behold, as I spake concerning those whom the Lord had chosen, yea, even three who were caught up into the heavens, that I knew not whether they were cleansed from mortality to immortality.
[50] But behold, since I wrote, I have inquired of the Lord, and he hath made it manifest unto me, that there must needs be a change wrought upon their bodies, or else it needs be that they must taste of death;
[51] Therefore that they might not taste of death, there was a change wrought upon their bodies, that they might not suffer pain nor sorrow, save it were for the sins of the world.
[52] Now this change was not equal to that which should take place at the last day; but there was a change wrought upon them, insomuch that Satan could have no power over them, that he could not tempt them, and they were sanctified in the flesh, that they were holy, and that the powers of the earth could not hold them;

Divider between facts

Followers of satan seek sin (selfishness)
Ether 3:89-90
[89] And Akish did administer unto them the oaths which were given by them of old, who also sought power, which had been handed down even from Cain, who was a murderer from the beginning.
[90] And they were kept up by the power of the devil to administer these oaths unto the people, to keep them in darkness, to help such as sought power, to gain power, and to murder, and to plunder, and to lie, and to commit all manner of wickedness and whoredoms.

Divider between facts

Everything that invites you to do good is of God and everything that invites you to do evil is of Satan. Every person has free will to seek either - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Moroni 7:12-16
[12] Wherefore take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God, to be of the devil.
[13] For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.
[14] For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that they may know good from evil; wherefore I shew unto you the way to judge: for everything which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ;
[15] Wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge, it is of God; but whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil,
[16] For after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no not one; neither doth his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.

Because Satan "seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself" (2 Nephi 2:27), he and his followers try to lead us away from righteousness...Individuals do not have to give in to Satan's temptations. Each person has the power to choose good over evil, and the Lord has promised to help all who seek Him through sincere prayer and faithfulness.

Commentary: That Satin can only tempt us and we have free agency to choose is consistent with the scriptures.
