Original Sin

Old Testament    New Testament    Book of Mormon    Statements of Belief

Origins of the Topic

Can people be prevented from entering Heaven if their parents or ancestors sinned against God?
The scriptures are very clear that God holds accountable those that sin and the sins of a relative are not held against a person. Even the House of Israel misinterpreted the generational iniquity stated in Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Ezekiel 18 corrects the misinterpretation that sons inherit the sins of the father and sets that each person is responsible for their own sins.

Commentary: Denominations vary in their interpretation of the scriptures regarding Adam's sin and the sins that each of us do.

Old Testament

Visiting iniquity of the fathers to the children only refers to children that repeat the sins of the fathers
Exodus 20:5-6
[5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
[6] And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Commentary: This is a similar Hebrew idiom as found in Deuteronomy 5:9-10 and Exodus 34:7, "Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation." When a man and woman marry, it is expected that they would have children. The more children they have, the greater the blessing. The first [Hebrew] character examined in this study [Exodus 34:7] pointed to the beginning of the Bridegroom and the bride. Here we see an enlarged נ (nun) at the beginning of this passage, which discusses generations of offspring. Specifically, the passage speaks of dividing those offspring into two groups, those who receive forgiveness and lovingkindness and those who do not, but receive the iniquity of their fathers. The Hebrew word נצר (notzar),in which the enlarged נ (nun) is found, has the meaning of "protect" or "preserve." Thus, those children who protect and preserve the Torah YHWH are the ones who shall receive the lovingkindness of YHWH. Source: Something Hidden - Revealed

Commentary: To summarize the Old Testament material, we can say that the passages about the "third and fourth generation" show a limitation on Gods judgement, since they are mentioned in the context of His lovingkindness shown to thousands. The key to blessing was to be in right covenant relationship with God. Source: Generational Curses

God will only hold accountable the people that actually sin against Him, and no one else - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Exodus 32:31-33
[31] And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
[32] Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
[33] And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

God uses adversity to remove sin. God remembers his covenant as soon as there is repentance - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Leviticus 26:23-45
[23] And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;
[24] Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.
[25] And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
[26] And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied.
[27] And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;
[28] Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
[29] And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.
[30] And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.
[31] And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.
[32] And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it.
[33] And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.
[34] Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.
[35] As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.
[36] And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
[37] And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.
[38] And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.
[39] And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.
[40] If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;
[41] And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity:
[42] Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
[43] The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.
[44] And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.
[45] But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.

Commentary: Those who will not be parted from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by judgments. Source: Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Commentary: The keeping of the Sabbath was not a performance binding upon the land, nor had the land been in fault because the Sabbath was not kept. As the earth groans under the pressure of the sin of men, so does it rejoice in deliverance from this pressure, and participation in the blessed rest of the whole creation. Source: Keil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament, Leviticus 26:35

Commentary: The purpose of adversity as described here is to ultimately remove (get rid of) sin. This can be as drastic as removing the people (who sin) from the land (which still retains cleanness and can rest - Psalm 132:13-14, "For the LORD hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell; for I have desired it"). Verses 39-41 illustrate the generational nature of sin where the sins of the father are repeated by the sons, but the sins of the sons are their own, "they shall confess their iniquity." When they confess their iniquity, they are also recognizing that it is the same sin that they repeated from their fathers, "and the iniquity of their fathers." In verse 44, even though the temporal punishment is as severe as can be described, God does not abandon His covenant and the temporal punishment is not meant to be eternal, "neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God". The expected final state is repentance. When repentance occurs, God remembers His covenant.

Moses considered visiting iniquity to the third and fourth generation to have limitations
Numbers 14:17-20
[17] And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my LORD be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying,
[18] The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
[19] Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.
[20] And the LORD said, I have pardoned according to thy word:

Commentary: What is so interesting here is that Moses cited the passage from the second commandment that warned about the consequences on the third and fourth generation when pleading for mercy and pardon from the Lord. This is strong evidence that Moses himself considered the passage to show a limitation on God's wrath and evidence of His mercy. Source: Generational Curses

One of several references for visiting iniquity to the third and fourth generation
Deuteronomy 5:9-10
[9] Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
[10] And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Commentary: Refer to commentaries for Exodus 20:5-6, Numbers 14:17-20, Deuteronomy 7:9-10.

Those that hate God bear their own immediate punishment - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Deuteronomy 7:9-10
[9] Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
[10] And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to his face.

Commentary: [This] is a passage in Deuteronomy that sheds light on [the] passages in Exodus because it also mentions God’s mercy to thousands, as well as His justice. To love God is the primary requirement of the Law, as was emphasized in Deuteronomy 6:5. To "hate" God in the context of covenant terminology was to reject the covenant and God as a covenant partner. Concerning the phrase "to the face" in this passage, Eugene Merrill states that, "This expression occurs only here and probably means that the judgement would not be reserved for unborn generations but would fall immediately upon those who had sinned in this manner, right there and then." Otherwise, the Israelites would misunderstand the 2nd commandment to mean that the children would be punished for the father's sins and the ones who sinned would escape. This verse says that those who reject the covenant (hating God) and refuse to love Him would bear their own immediate punishment. Although the third and fourth generations are not mentioned in Deuteronomy 7:9,10, the wording of "a thousandth generation" brings to mind the previous passages. This interpretation gives weight to what Calvin and Kaiser said, that it is the haters of God themselves who are punished, not children who refuse to participate in their parent's sins. External acts of worship have no value unless there is repentance
1 Samuel 3:12-14
[12] In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
[13] For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
[14] And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.

Commentary: "The iniquity of Eli's house shall not be expiated by sacrifice or offering forever" (1 Samuel 3:14). This seems to imply that Hophni and Phinehas, Eli's evil sons, fully expected that their sins could be removed by offerings and sacrifices. However, no external act of worship is of any value unless it reflects a condition of repentance and sincerity on the part of the worshipper. The arrogant, deliberate, and unrepentant attitude of Eli's sons meant that their punishment could not be averted. Source: Burton Coffman's Commentaries on the Bible.

Each person is responsible for their own sins. This clarifies that sins of ancestors are NOT a responsibility of a person - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Jeremiah 31:27-30
[27] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast.
[28] And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the Lord.
[29] In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten a sour grape, and the children's teeth are set on edge.
[30] But every one shall die for his own iniquity: every man that eateth the sour grape, his teeth shall be set on edge.

Commentary: One of the ways the Jews avoided taking responsibility for the consequences of their own sin was to blame it on their parents. This phrase concerning the sour grapes and teeth on edge was a common and idiomatic part of their daily lives. It was a constant reminder that any suffering they experienced (teeth set on edge) was the result of their ancestors who "ate sour grapes," a euphemism for willful sinning. Though the idiom was a fabrication of Jewish tradition, and not the teaching of God, it will be clear in the New Jerusalem that each person is responsible for their own actions. Each person who chooses to eat the sour grapes of sin will suffer the consequences of that choice. One will no longer be able to blame the consequences of their own sin on their fathers, grandfathers, and ancestor. Each person will answer to God for their own choices. Jeremiah 32:17-19
[17] Ah Lord GOD! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
[18] Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the LORD of hosts, is his name,
[19] Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

Commentary: Here is a Jewish interpretation of this passage: "Perhaps the strongest Scriptural support for the interpretation that ‘poqed 'avon abot 'al banim’ [visits the iniquities of fathers on sons] applies only to children who continue the sinful ways of their father has been brought from Jeremiah 32:18-19. There, in two consecutive verses, the prophet cites God's attribute of cross-generational reward and punishment immediately followed by the principle of individual accountability." Each person can deliver only themselves (and not their children) by their righteousness - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ezekiel 14:13-20
[13] Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
[14] Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord God.
[15] If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
[16] Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
[17] Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
[18] Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered themselves.
[19] Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:

Corrects the misinterpretation that sons inherit the sins of the father - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ezekiel 18:2-4
[2] What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?
[3] As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
[4] Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

Commentary: The point of the captivity was to purge Israel of pagan idolatry that was covenant breaking in its worse form. The second commandment forbade this pagan practice. The Israelites of the captivity, rather than complaining of being unjustly punished because it was their parents who were the idolaters, are urged to return to the Lord in covenant faithfulness, and thus "live." There is to be no fatalistic interpretation of the principle of the third and fourth generation. Source: Generational Curses.

Specifically states that sons do not inherit the sins of the father - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ezekiel 18:19-24
[19] Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
[20] The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
[21] But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
[22] All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
[23] Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
[24] But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

Commentary: Ezekiel made verses 18:2-4 very plain. He specifically states that punishment is not inherited by the son (verse 19). The Lord God states that it is not his pleasure to see the wicked die, but that they should repent and live (verse 23).

[3] If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
[4] Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.

[6] But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.

Book of Mormon

The fall of Adam and Eve was part of God's plan. People are under a state of probation to learn to repent - Key Verse - Key Scripture
2 Nephi 1:105-115
[105] And after Adam and Eve had partaken of the forbidden fruit, they were driven out of the garden of Eden, to till the earth.
[106] And they have brought forth children; yea, even the family of all the earth.
[107] And the days of the children of men were prolonged, according to the will of God, that they might repent while in the flesh;
[108] Wherefore, their state became a state of probation, and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God gave unto the children of men.
[109] For he gave commandment that all men must repent;
[110] For he shewed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents.
[111] And now, behold, if Adam had not transgressed, he would not have fallen; but he would have remained in the garden of Eden.
[112] And all things which were created, must have remained in the same state which they were, after they were created; and they must have remained for ever, and had no end.
[113] And they would have had no children; wherefore, they would have remained in a state of innocence, having no joy, for they knew no misery; doing no good, for they knew no sin.
[114] But behold, all things have been done in the wisdom of him who knoweth all things.
[115] Adam fell, that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy.

After the fall of Adam and Eve, people had free will. Because of free will, God had to give commandments to identify good and evil. - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Alma 9:38-55
[38] Now we see that Adam did fall by the partaking of the forbidden fruit, according to the word of God; and thus we see, that by his fall, all mankind became a lost and a fallen people.
[39] And now behold, I say unto you, that if it had been possible for Adam to have partaken of the fruit of the tree of life at that time, there would have been no death, and the word would have been void, making God a liar: for he said, If thou eat, thou shall surely die.
[40] And we see that death comes upon mankind, yea, the death which has been spoken of by Amulek, which is the temporal death; nevertheless there was a space granted unto man, in which he might repent;
[41] Therefore this life became a probationary state; a time to prepare to meet God; a time to prepare for that endless state, which has been spoken of by us, which is after the resurrection of the dead.
[42] Now if it had not been for the plan of redemption, which was laid from the foundation of the world, there could have been no resurrection of the dead;
[43] But there was a plan of redemption laid, which shall bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, of which has been spoken.
[44] And now behold, if it were possible that our first parents could have gone forth and partaken of the tree of life, they would have been for ever miserable, having no preparatory state;
[45] And thus the plan of redemption would have been frustrated, and the word of God would have been void, taking none effect.
[46] But behold, it was not so; but it was appointed unto man that they must die; and after death, they must come to judgment; even that same judgment of which we have spoken, which is the end.
[47] And after God had appointed that these things should come unto man, behold, then he saw that it was expedient that man should know concerning the things whereof he had appointed unto them;
[48] Therefore he sent angels to converse with them, who caused men to behold of his glory.
[49] And they began from that time forth to call on his name; therefore God conversed with men, and made known unto them the plan of redemption, which had been prepared from the foundation of the world;
[50] And this he made known unto them according to their faith and repentance, and their holy works;
[51] Wherefore he gave commandments unto men, they having first transgressed the first commandments as to things which were temporal, and becoming as gods, knowing good from evil, placing themselves in a state to act, or being placed in a state to act according to their wills and pleasures, whether to do evil or to do good;
[52] Therefore God gave unto them commandments, after having made known unto them the plan of redemption, that they should not do evil, the penalty thereof being a second death, which was an everlasting death as to things pertaining unto righteousness;
[53] For on such the plan of redemption could have no power, for the works of justice could not be destroyed, according to the supreme goodness of God.
[54] But God did call on men, in the name of his Son, (this being the plan of redemption which was laid,) saying: If ye will repent, and harden not your hearts, then will I have mercy upon you, through mine only begotten Son.
[55] Therefore, whosoever repenteth, and hardeneth not his heart, he shall have claim on mercy through mine only begotten Son, unto a remission of his sins; and these shall enter into my rest.

Commentary: God also sent angels to help instruct people on the plan of redemption. Our lives are a time of probation to learn good and repent from evil in order to enter into the rest of the Lord in heaven.

Article VII—Of Original or Birth Sin: Original sin standeth not in the following of Adam (as the Pelagians do vainly talk), but it is the corruption of the nature of every man, that naturally is engendered of the offspring of Adam, whereby man is very far gone from original righteousness, and of his own nature inclined to evil, and that continually.

The Sermons of John Wesley - Sermon 44 - Original Sin. The Scripture avers, that "by one man's disobedience all men were constituted sinners;" that "in Adam all died," spiritually died, lost the life and the image of God; that fallen, sinful Adam then "begat a son in his own likeness;" -- nor was it possible he should beget him in any other; for "who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean"

Commentary: That children are contaminated by sin at birth is not consistent with the scriptures where a person is responsible for their own sin - which requires that they be mentally and physically capable of sinning. That young children sin is inconsistent with Jesus holding up as a standard that we need to be like little children in order to enter into the kingdom of heaven, "Matthew 18:3 - And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven." Also, sin is not imputed to young children (see Infant Baptism). And, the scriptures are plain that children do not inherit the sins of their parents (Ezekiel 18)

Southern Baptist Convention - Partially Consistent with Scripture

Convention Item 122 Committee On Baptist Faith And Message (not A Resolution) - In the beginning man was innocent of sin and was endowed by his Creator with freedom of choice. By his free choice man sinned against God and brought sin into the human race. Through the temptation of Satan man transgressed the command of God, and fell from his original innocence; whereby his posterity inherit a nature and an environment inclined toward sin, and as soon as they are capable of moral action become transgressors and are under condemnation.

Commentary: The SBC has removed their statement affirming soul competency. Recognizing that one must be capable of moral action before they become transgressors implies a time when infants / children are not capable of transgression (sin).
