Mysteries of God

Old Testament    New Testament    Book of Mormon    Statements of Belief

Origins of the Topic

What are the mysteries of God?
There are several statements in the Bible that refer to the "mysteries of the kingdom of heaven" or "mysteries of God."
Commentary: The scriptures say that there is nothing special about the mysteries of God. He has made them known from the beginning and anyone willing to hear and understand can know them. They are mysteries only because we let the things of the world enter our heart. We cause the mysteries because we accept the things of the world and shut out the truth of the Gospel. This topic is very closely related to the topic on Glory.

Old Testament

Connects the hidden parts to wisdom
Psalm 51:6 - Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

The world in our hearts hide the things of God - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ecclesiastes 3:9-11
[9] What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
[10] I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
[11] He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

God has declared things from the beginning - They are mysteries until our ears are open - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Isaiah 48:5-8
[5] I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; before it came to pass I shewed it thee: lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image, hath commanded them.
[6] Thou hast heard, see all this; and will not ye declare it? I have shewed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them.
[7] They are created now, and not from the beginning; even before the day when thou heardest them not; lest thou shouldest say, Behold, I knew them.
[8] Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldest deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.

Mysteries are hidden to those that do not see or hear. This is why people cannot understand parables - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Matthew 13:9-13
[9] Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. [10] And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
[11] He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
[12] For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
[13] Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

Commentary: This is the same as Luke 8:10, "And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand."

and Mark 4:9-13 [9] And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. [10] And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable. [11] And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables: [12] That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them. [13] And he said unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how then will ye know all parables?

Jesus did many things that we will never know about (mysteries to us), but the people that knew Jesus knew of these things
John 21:25 - And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

Parables are a mystery to people wise in their own conceits. We blind ourselves (and create the mysteries) - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Romans 11:21-25
[21] For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
[22] Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.
[23] And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again.
[24] For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree?
[25] For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.

Mysteries are secrets from the beginning. They are made known to those with faith
Romans 16:25-27
[25] Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
[26] But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
[27] To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.

Mysteries are hidden wisdom for our glory (understanding) - Key Verse - Key Scripture
1 Corinthians 2:4-10
[4] And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power:
[5] That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
[6] Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
[7] But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
[8] Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
[9] But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
[10] But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Commentary: These verses connect hidden wisdom that God gives to "our glory" (our wisdom and understanding). See the topic on glory.

Ministers are stewards of the mysteries of God. Jesus will bring to light (understanding) the hidden things of darkness (darkness creates the mysteries of God)
1 Corinthians 4:1,4-5
[1] Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
[4] For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.
[5] Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

Commentary: A steward <oikonomos> is a manager of the household, meaning that they are entrusted with the mysteries - hence, the mysteries are known to them.

A mystery is revealed - We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed
1 Corinthians 15:50-54
[50] Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
[51] Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
[52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
[53] For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
[54] So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

Commentary: Showing a mystery is to make known a portion of the Gospel to the people that has not heretofore been known

Wisdom will make known unto us the mystery of God's will
Ephesians 1:3-10
[3] Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
[4] According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
[5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,
[6] To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
[7] In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
[8] Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;
[9] Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:
[10] That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him:

Knowledge and wisdom will make mysteries known - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ephesians 3:1-10
[1] For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles,
[2] If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
[3] How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
[4] Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
[5] Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
[6] That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
[7] Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
[8] Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
[9] And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
[10] To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

A mystery unveiled - Parable of husbands and wives and Jesus and his church - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Ephesians 5:21-33
[21] Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. [22] Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
[23] For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
[24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, [27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
[28] So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
[29] For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:
[30] For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
[31] For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
[32] This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
[33] Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

[2] That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ;

Colossians 4:3-5
[3] Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds:
[4] That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. [5] Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.

Iniquity creates mysteries. People who let iniquity work on them will remove themselves
2 Thessalonians 2:1-8
[1] Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
[2] That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
[3] Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
[4] Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
[5] Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
[6] And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
[7] For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
[8] And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Revelation 2:16-17
[16] Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

The abominations of the world create the mysteries of God - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Revelation 17:3-9
[3] So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
[4] And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
[5] And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.
[6] And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
[7] And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
[8] The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
[9] And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

The mysteries of God are made known with learning and wisdom
1 Nephi 1:1 - I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days -- nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days; yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of th and the language of the Egyptians.

[28] And the way is prepared from the foundation of the world, if it so be that they repent and come unto him;
[29] For he that diligently seeketh shall find;
[30] And the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them by the power of the Holy Ghost, as well in this time as in times of old;
[31] And as well in times of old as in times to come;
[32] Wherefore, the course of the Lord is one eternal round.

The Messiah will bring people out of hidden darkness (mysteries) to light
2 Nephi 2:6-9
[6] And great were the covenants of the Lord, which he made unto Joseph; wherefore, Joseph truly saw our day.
[7] And he obtained a promise of the Lord, that out of the fruit of his loins, the Lord God would raise up a righteous branch unto the house of Israel;
[8] Not the Messiah, but a branch which was to be broken off; nevertheless, to be remembered in the covenants of the Lord,
[9] That the Messiah should be made manifest unto them in the latter days, in the spirit of power, unto the bringing of them out of darkness unto light; yea, out of hidden darkness and out of captivity unto freedom.

Mysteries are hidden until they are revealed - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Jacob 3:7-11
[7] Wherefore, we search the prophets; and we have many revelations, and the spirit of prophecy, and having all these witnesses, we obtain a hope, and our faith becometh unshaken, insomuch that we truly can command in the name of Jesus, and the very trees obey us, or the mountains, or the waves of the sea;
[8] Nevertheless, the Lord God sheweth us our weakness, that we may know that it is by his grace, and his great condescensions unto the children of men, that we have power to do these things.
[9] Behold, great and marvelous are the works of the Lord.
[10] How unsearchable are the depths of the mysteries of him; and it is impossible that man should find out all his ways.
[11] And no man knoweth of his ways, save it be revealed unto him; wherefore, brethren, despise not the revelations of God.

Plates of Brass (writings) contain the mysteries of God. It shows we cannot remember and understand it all, but writings help us remember what God keeps telling us - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Mosiah 1:1-7
[1] And now there was no more contention in all the land of Zarahemla, among all the people who belonged to King Benjamin, so that King Benjamin had continual peace all the remainder of his days.
[2] And it came to pass that he had three sons; and he called their names Mosiah, and Helorum, and Helaman.
[3] And he caused that they should be taught in all the language of his fathers, that thereby they might become men of understanding; and that they might know concerning the prophecies which had been spoken by the mouths of their fathers, which were delivered them by the hand of the Lord.
[4] And he also taught them concerning the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, saying, My sons, I would that ye should remember, that were it not for these plates, which contain these records and these commandments, we must have suffered in ignorance, even at this present time, not knowing the mysteries of God:
[5] For it were not possible that our father Lehi could have remembered all these things, to have taught them to his children, except it were for the help of these plates:
[6] For he having been taught in the language of the Egyptians, therefore he could read these engravings, and teach them to his children, that thereby they could teach them to their children, and so fulfilling the commandments of God, even down to this present time.
[7] I say unto you, my sons, Were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief,

Open ears and hearts are required to understand the mysteries of God - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Mosiah 1:38-39
[38] And these are the words which he spake and caused to be written, saying: My brethren, all ye that have assembled yourselves together, you that can hear my words which I shall speak unto you this day:
[39] For I have not commanded you to come up hither to trifle with the words which I shall speak, but that you should hearken unto me, and open your ears that ye may hear, and your hearts that ye may understand, and your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view.

Interpreters can make known the mysteries of God written on the plates
Mosiah 5:72-85
[72] Now Ammon said unto him, I can assuredly tell thee, O king, of a man that can translate the records: for he has wherewith that he can look, and translate all records that are of ancient date: and it is a gift from God.
[73] And the things are called interpreters; and no man can look in them, except he be commanded, lest he should look for that he ought not, and he should perish.
[74] And whosoever is commanded to look in them, the same is called seer.
[75] And behold, the king of the people who is in the land of Zarahemla, is the man that is commanded to do these things, and who has this high gift from God.
[76] And the king said, that a seer is greater than a prophet.
[77] And Ammon said, that a seer is a revelator, and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater, can no man have, except he should possess the power of God, which no man can; yet a man may have great power given him from God.
[78] But a seer can know of things which have past, and also of things which are to come;
[79] And by them shall all things be revealed, or rather, shall secret things be made manifest, and hidden things shall come to light, and things which are not known, shall be made known by them;
[80] And also, things shall be made known by them, which otherwise could not be known.
[81] Thus God has provided a means that man, through faith, might work mighty miracles; therefore, he becometh a great benefit to his fellow beings.
[82] And now, when Ammon had made an end of speaking these words, the king rejoiced exceedingly, and gave thanks to God, saying,
[83] Doubtless, a great mystery is contained within these plates; and these interpreters were doubtless prepared for the purpose of unfolding all such mysteries to the children of men. [
84] O how marvelous are the works of the Lord, and how long doth he suffer with his people;
[85] Yea, and how blind and impenetrable are the understandings of the children of men: for they will not seek wisdom, neither do they desire that she should rule over them.

Hardening your heart can hide the mysteries of God
Alma 8:5-8
[5] Yea, and behold, I have many kindred and friends, and I have also acquired much riches, by the hand of my industry;
[6] Nevertheless, after all this, I never have known much of the ways of the Lord, and his mysteries and marvelous power.
[7] I said I never had known much of these things; but behold I mistake, for I have seen much of his mysteries and his miraculous power; yea, even in the preservation of the lives of this people;
[8] Nevertheless, I did harden my heart, for I was called many times, and I would not hear; therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would not know;

It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God - hardening the heart will hide them - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Alma 9:13-20
[13] And Zeezrom began to inquire of them diligently, that he might know more concerning the kingdom of God.
[14] And he said unto Alma, What does this mean which Amulek hath spoken concerning the resurrection of the dead, that all shall rise from the dead, both the just and the unjust, and are brought to stand before God, to be judged according to their works?
[15] And now Alma began to expound these things unto him, saying, It is given unto many to know the mysteries of God;
[16] Nevertheless they are laid under a strict command, that they shall not impart only according to the portion of his word, which he doth grant unto the children of men; according to the heed and diligence which they give unto him;
[17] And therefore he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word;
[18] And he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God, until they know them in full;
[19] And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word, until they know nothing concerning his mysteries;
[20] And then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction.

Commentary: These verses state that, for each person, the mysteries of God are only those parts of the Gospel that they do not know. Those people that are willing to follow God will have those parts of the Gospel that they don't know about, made known to them. Likewise, the people that do not follow God, will never understand the Gospel and eventually be filled with "non-Gospel" information to the point that they know, or remember, absolutely nothing about the Gospel.

Faith, good works, and prayer will permit people to know the mysteries of God - Key Verse - Key Scripture
Alma 14:102-104
[102] And now behold, my brethren, what natural man is there, that knoweth these things? I say unto you, there is none that knoweth these things, save it be the penitent;
[103] Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing: unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed;
[104] Yea, and it shall be given unto such, to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

Commentary: As mentioned in the other verses on this topic, a "mystery" is only portions of the Gospel that an individual person does not know about. The totality of the Gospel has been the same since the beginning and has not changed. There will be times when a person of faith, for example a prophet, experiences, or understands, a portion of the Gospel that others have not experienced, or made known to them.

Commentary: While the totality of the Gospel has not changed since the beginning, there are portions of the Gospel that God has yet to reveal to anyone.

Commentary: Commentary: The concepts of being unselfish (seek not for riches), seeking wisdom, and keeping the commandments all lead to having the mysteries revealed are consistem with the scriptures. That Satan (iniquity) prevents understanding the mysteries (by leading people away from God) is also consistent with the scriptures.
